Abstract: 

Springtime subtropical rains in the Mei-Yu and its eastern North America counterpart are examined from the point of view of flow aspects that shape the moisture field. The stationarity or persistence of the pattern is an important aspect that is poorly measured by traditional Eulerian diagnostics, but clear in animations. Lagrangian flow diagnostics are tested for their ability to objectively capture the relevant lessons of precipitable water-centered animations.
